FAQs

According to a recent Harvard study, 22% of students use a college admissions counselor independent of their school counselor. Why? Because it reduces stress and puts the responsibility of the never-ending to do list inherent in college application season to someone else besides the parent. It's also great to have a sounding board with expertise in the field. We'd love to meet you and discuss the application process further - and how we might fit into your student's goals! However, we have included some common questions we get about college counseling.

What is a college consultant and why do I need to hire one?

We'll be the first to tell you that there is no "need" when it comes to hiring a college counselor. Many parents tell us though, that hiring us made their student's senior year so much easier. We provide a timeline, framework, organization and project management and expertise to the process. We literally walk with families through this process as much or as little as they want us to. You may not 'need' a college admissions counselor, but having one can be helpful and make things less stressful.

How are you different than a guidance counselor at school?

Guidance counselors are a wonderful resource for students - and we want to emphasize it's not an either/or situation. Your student will also need the support of their guidance counselor to some extent. Here is how we are different: we have less students so your student gets individualized, personal attention throughout the process. In addition, college admissions is ALL we do. So there is a certain level of expertise that we bring to the table when it comes to essays, finding a college fit, explaining financial aid and more.

When should we start working with a counselor?

Some students come to us early, in 8th or 9th grade. Other students come to us fall of senior year. Regardless, we meet you where you're at, and customize a plan for working with you and your student.

Do you work with students in person or online?

Both! We see students from around the country via Zoom. However, we also meet students who are local to Newtown, CT at various spots.

Can you help us find scholarships?

Yes! We work on scholarship essays for students

Will this help my child get into a highly selective college?

We do not get students admitted into any college. What we do is help students demonstrate why they deserve to be admitted.
